Description
Fimbriaphyllia ancora, commonly known as the Hammer or Anchor Coral, is a long-standing favorite in the reef aquarium hobby. Valued for the constant, gentle motion of its polyps, this Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral introduces a dynamic element that few other species can replicate. Its unique tentacle shape and robust nature make it a popular choice for both new and experienced reef keepers looking to add a classic centerpiece to their aquarium.
The Hammer Coral is characterized by its skeleton, which can be a branching type or a wall-type formation. From this base, it extends long, fleshy polyps throughout the day. Each polyp is tipped with a distinctive T-shape, resembling a hammer or an anchor, which gives the coral its common name. This particular specimen exhibits a deep purple coloration on its tentacles, a highly sought-after variant that provides a solid splash of color.
For care, Fimbriaphyllia ancora thrives under moderate lighting, with a PAR range between 75 and 150 being ideal. It prefers moderate, indirect water flow which allows its tentacles to sway gently without being retracted or damaged. Placement should be in the lower to middle sections of the tank, with ample space around it. This species is an aggressive coral, known to send out long sweeper tentacles at night that can sting neighbors; a buffer zone of at least 6 inches from other corals is highly recommended. While photosynthetic, its health is supported by supplemental feeding. Target feeding small, meaty foods like mysis or enriched brine shrimp once or twice a week is beneficial. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium between 1250-1350 ppm. A slow drip acclimation is the best practice to reduce stress upon arrival.
The constant, graceful movement of its polyps brings a unique sense of life and motion to a reef tank. For hobbyists seeking a species with visible activity and a stately presence, the Hammer Coral is a consistently rewarding addition to a well-maintained marine environment.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
Payment & Security
We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
