Rainbow Lobophyllia

Lobophyllia are among the more eye-catching large polyp stony corals, prized for their often vibrant colouration and relatively straightforward care. This Rainbow Lobophyllia brings a lively palette to the reef, making it a standout addition for both new and experienced hobbyists. This piece measures approximately 10cm. They are commonly known as Brain Corals or Meat Corals due to their fleshy appearance.

This species typically forms large, colonial, hemispherical or flat structures. The individual polyps are sizable and fleshy, with a distinct, often intricate, skeletal structure visible beneath the soft tissue. The "rainbow" descriptor refers to the brilliant and diverse hues that can be present across a single colony, often including shades of red, green, orange, yellow, and blue, creating a kaleidoscopic effect under appropriate lighting. Their robust polyps extend during the day, revealing their full splendour.

For optimal health, Rainbow Lobophyllia prefer moderate PAR lighting, ideally between 75-150 PAR. They thrive under moderate, indirect water flow that helps keep their surface clean without causing tissue damage. Placement on the sand bed or a lower rock work position is generally best. While photosynthetic, they benefit significantly from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialized coral foods, offered a few times a week. Maintain stable water parameters: Calcium 400-450 ppm, Alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and Magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. Like many LPS corals, Lobophyllia can be aggressive, extending sweeper tentacles at night, so ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent chemical warfare. Acclimation should be gradual, especially when introducing to new lighting conditions.

These corals add significant visual interest and texture to a reef aquarium, their substantial size and dynamic colouration providing a focal point. Their relatively peaceful nature, outside of their sweeper tentacles, allows for integration into diverse coral displays with proper planning.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
