Rainbow Lobophyllia

The Rainbow Lobophyllia, often called a Lobo or Brain Coral, is a substantial LPS coral that brings a vibrant splash of colour to the reef aquarium. These corals are popular for their large, fleshy polyps and the striking array of colours they can display, making them a focal point in many reef setups. This piece measures approximately 12cm.

Lobophyllia corals typically form large, encrusting or hemispherical colonies with individual polyps that can inflate significantly. This particular specimen exhibits a spectacular rainbow of hues across its fleshy mantle, with individual sections displaying different vibrant shades that blend seamlessly. When fully extended, the polyps have a textured, almost folded appearance, adding to their visual interest.

For successful husbandry, Rainbow Lobophyllia thrives under moderate lighting, with a PAR range of 75-150 being ideal. Moderate, indirect flow is preferred; too much direct flow can damage the fleshy tissue. Placement on the sandbed or a lower rockwork position is generally best. They are enthusiastic eaters and will readily consume meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or krill, which should be offered a few times a week. Maintain stable water parameters: Calcium 420-440 ppm, Alkalinity 8-9 dKH, and Magnesium 1300-1400 ppm. While not overly aggressive, ensure adequate spacing from other corals, especially those with stinging tentacles, to prevent chemical or physical warfare. Acclimation should be gradual, allowing the coral to adjust to its new environment over several hours.

Rainbow Lobophyllia are robust corals that, once settled, become long-lived and impressive additions to a mature reef system. Their size and colouration make them excellent centrepiece corals, creating a vivid contrast against more subdued inhabitants.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
