Red Acan Bowerbanki

Acanthastrea bowerbanki, often simply called Acan Bowerbanki, is a robust LPS coral that has been a long-standing favourite in the reef aquarium hobby. Known for its distinct, large polyps, it offers a striking visual presence. This particular specimen is a beautiful red, adding a classic, vibrant touch to any display. This piece measures approximately 5cm.

Bowerbanki Acans have a flat, encrusting growth form, sometimes developing into a more massive colony over time. Their polyps are notably large and fleshy, exhibiting a textured surface. The red colouration of this specimen is consistent across its polyps, providing a rich, uniform appearance under proper lighting.

For optimal health, Red Acan Bowerbanki thrive under moderate to high PAR lighting, around 100-200 PAR. They prefer low to moderate indirect flow to keep their polyps clean without being blasted. Placement on the sand bed or lower to mid-rockwork is generally ideal. While they possess zooxanthellae for photosynthesis, supplemental feeding of meaty foods like mysis shrimp or copepods a few times a week will enhance growth and colouration. Maintain stable water parameters: Calcium 400-440 ppm, Alkalinity 8-9 dKH, and Magnesium 1300-1400 ppm. Acans can be aggressive, extending sweeper tentacles at night, so ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals. When introducing, a slow acclimation process is recommended.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
