Description
The War Coral, Favites pentagona, is a classic large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its distinctive and contrasting colors. Its encrusting growth habit allows it to cover rockwork with a unique pattern of angular corallites, making it a favorite for aquarists looking to add a splash of color and texture to their reef landscape. This species is generally hardy and can be a great choice for both intermediate and experienced reef keepers.
The appearance of Favites pentagona is defined by its shared-wall corallites that are angular or pentagonal, giving the colony a honeycomb-like structure. The coloration that gives it the "War Coral" name comes from the dramatic contrast between the polyp tissue color and the surrounding septa. This often manifests as vibrant green corallite walls with deep red or orange oral discs, creating a battlefield of color across the coral's surface. Each polyp is relatively small, contributing to a detailed and intricate colony appearance as it grows.
For best care, place your War Coral in the lower to middle sections of the tank where it will receive moderate lighting, ideally in the 75-150 PAR range. It prefers moderate, indirect water flow which is strong enough to keep detritus from settling on its surface but not so strong that its polyps cannot extend comfortably. Favites corals are aggressive and are known to extend powerful sweeper tentacles at night, so be sure to provide at least 3-4 inches of space between them and any neighboring corals. They are active feeders and will benefit from weekly target feeding of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialized LPS pellets. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium around 1250-1350 ppm. A standard drip acclimation is recommended when introducing it to your aquarium.
With its manageable care level and striking appearance, the War Coral is a rewarding species that brings a dynamic and colorful presence to a stable reef aquarium. Its steady encrusting growth adds a sense of maturity to the reef, making it a worthwhile long-term addition for any LPS enthusiast.
Please note: This is not a WYSIWYG item. You will receive a coral frag of the same species and similar coloration/quality to what is photographed, but the exact specimen may vary. Each piece is unique and hand-selected for health and color.
Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
