Description
Description
Pectinia is a large polyp stony (LPS) coral that builds a thin, plating skeleton, creating unusual and dramatic structures in a reef aquarium. It's a species for the patient hobbyist, as its slow growth is offset by a unique, almost alien appearance. This specimen has the classic deep red colouration associated with the "Red Eye" Pectinia morph.
Pectinia grows in whorls and plates, often with sharp spires rising from the base. The tissue itself is fleshy and textured, covering the delicate skeleton beneath. The coral's polyps, or "eyes," are small and scattered across the surface, giving the coral its common name. The deep red of the main body is complemented by the coloured centres of these polyps.
For care, Pectinia does best under lower light intensity. A PAR level between 75 and 150 is a good target range, making the sandbed or a well-shaded part of the rockwork a suitable location. It requires low to moderate, indirect water flow to keep its surface clean without blasting the delicate tissue. Like other LPS, it's photosynthetic but will show enhanced colour and growth with occasional spot feedings of meaty foods.
Keeping this coral peaceful is a matter of placement. Pectinia is known for its potent sweeper tentacles, which it can extend at night to sting and damage neighbouring corals. It's essential to give it a wide berth and place it where it won't make contact with other tank inhabitants as it grows. Stable water parameters, particularly alkalinity and calcium, will support its skeletal development.
This is a WYSIWYG item, so you'll receive the exact specimen pictured.
Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
Payment & Security
We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
