Red & Green Blasto Coral

Blastomussa wellsi, often just called Blasto, is an LPS coral that has been a long-time favourite in the reef aquarium hobby. Their striking colours and relatively easy care make them a great addition for both beginners and experienced reef keepers. This piece measures approximately 7cm. This particular specimen displays vibrant red and green polyps, a classic and highly sought-after colour combination. Its growth form is typically hemispherical or colonial, with each polyp having a fleshy, inflated appearance. The polyps are usually quite large, and their mouths are often visible in the centre, contrasting with the rich red and green tissue. They extend well during the day, showing off their full colouration and texture. Blasto corals thrive in moderate lighting conditions, around 75-150 PAR, and prefer lower to moderate indirect water flow. High flow can cause the polyps to retract excessively, leading to stress. Ideal placement is on the sandbed or lower to mid-rockwork where they can receive stable light and flow. While they host zooxanthellae for most of their nutritional needs, occasional feeding of fine particulate foods or meaty foods like mysis shrimp will promote faster growth and better colouration. For water chemistry, maintaining Calcium at 400-450 ppm, Alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and Magnesium at 1250-1350 ppm is important. They are generally peaceful but should be given enough space to avoid direct contact with other corals, as their fleshy polyps can be sensitive to abrasion or stinging from aggressive neighbours. Acclimation should be gradual, especially to new lighting levels.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
