Description
Description
Blastomussa wellsi, often simply called a Blasto, is a popular Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral among reef aquarium hobbyists. Its appeal lies in its large, fleshy polyps that display a wide range of colors, combined with a relatively peaceful nature and manageable care requirements. This makes it a suitable choice for aquarists who are looking to add the unique texture of a brain-style coral without the aggressive behavior associated with many other species.
This species is known for its distinct, separate polyps that inflate with water, giving them a puffy, round appearance. The polyps grow out from a shared skeletal base and will slowly multiply to form a small colony. While individual coloration can vary, Blastomussa wellsi often exhibits rich colors, typically in shades of red, green, or purple, sometimes with contrasting colors between the outer ring and the central mouth. These vibrant colors make it a focal point in many reef tanks.
A dedicated care paragraph is essential for long-term success with Blastomussa. This coral prefers low to moderate lighting, somewhere in the 75-150 PAR range, as intense light can cause the polyps to retract or bleach. Place it on the sandbed or in the lower third of the tank on the rockwork, ensuring it is not directly under high-output lighting. Water flow should be low to moderate and indirect; too much flow will irritate the fleshy polyps and prevent them from fully expanding. While Blastomussa can absorb nutrients from the water, it benefits greatly from occasional target feeding. Offer meaty foods like mysis shrimp or specialized LPS pellets once or twice a week. Maintain stable water parameters with Calcium at 400-450 ppm, Alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and Magnesium at 1300-1450 ppm. It is a peaceful coral but should be given a few inches of space from its neighbors to allow for future growth and prevent incidental contact. Acclimate carefully using a slow drip method to minimize stress.
With its attractive appearance and straightforward husbandry, the Blastomussa wellsi is a rewarding coral for many hobbyists. It provides a beautiful splash of color and a unique shape to the lower areas of a reef aquarium. Its peaceful disposition means it can be safely kept in a mixed reef environment, making it a valuable addition for both new and seasoned reef keepers.
Please note: This is not a WYSIWYG item. You will receive a coral frag of the same species and similar coloration/quality to what is photographed, but the exact specimen may vary. Each piece is unique and hand-selected for health and color.
Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
