Description

Symphyllia is a classic large-polyp stony coral, often called a Closed Brain Coral. It has been a long-standing favourite in the reef aquarium hobby for its bold, fleshy appearance and wide range of colours. This specimen shows a nice contrast of red and green across its surface.

In a home reef, Symphyllia forms a low, encrusting, or dome-shaped colony with deep valleys. The tissue is thick and puffy, and can retract if disturbed or if flow is too direct. At night, it may extend short feeder tentacles from the centre of its mouths. The colour patterning on this piece mixes areas of deep red with a contrasting green, giving it a distinct look under aquarium lighting.

For best results, place Symphyllia on the sandbed or a flat, low-lying rock. It needs moderate, indirect water flow—just enough to keep the tissue clean without causing it to pull back from the skeleton. A moderate light level, around 100-200 PAR, is usually sufficient. Like most LPS corals, it will benefit from stable alkalinity (8-9 dKH), calcium (420-440 ppm), and magnesium (1300-1400 ppm). It is an aggressive coral that can extend long sweeper tentacles at night, so be sure to leave at least 10-15 cm of space between it and any neighbouring corals.

Its defined placement on the sandbed or low rockwork makes it a predictable grower and a solid anchor point in an LPS-dominant system. Because of its aggressive nature, planning its location from the start ensures a peaceful reef in the long term. It is a hardy coral that, once settled, is a reliable and rewarding resident in a stable aquarium.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
