Description

Homophyllia australis, commonly known to hobbyists as the Australian Scolymia or Button Coral, is a well-regarded large polyp stony (LPS) coral. These corals are appreciated for their simple care, large fleshy single polyps, and wide range of possible colors. They are a solitary species that makes for an excellent centerpiece specimen in the lower areas of a reef aquarium.

This species grows as a single, circular polyp with a calcified base. The fleshy tissue can inflate considerably with water, making the coral appear much larger than its underlying skeleton. The surface texture can range from smooth to ribbed with prominent septa showing through the tissue. While they come in many color variations, including greens, oranges, and multicolored patterns, this specimen exhibits a rich red coloration.

For best results, Homophyllia australis should be placed on the sandbed or a low rock structure. They require low to moderate lighting, ideally in the 50 to 150 PAR range, as intense light can cause tissue recession. Water flow should also be low to moderate and indirect; strong, direct flow will prevent the polyp from fully expanding and may cause damage. These corals benefit from occasional target feeding with meaty foods like mysis or brine shrimp once or twice a week. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium between 1250-1350 ppm. While not overly aggressive, provide a few inches of space from neighboring corals to prevent tissue damage.

As a relatively slow-growing coral, the Australian Scolymia is a rewarding addition for the patient hobbyist. Its substantial presence and intense coloration offer a focal point for the lower regions of a reef tank, making it a popular choice for collectors and beginners alike.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
