Description

Mushroom corals from the Discosoma genus are a classic choice for reef aquarists, known for their easy-going nature and variety of colours. This particular variety has a rich red colouration that can add a nice patch of warmth to the rockwork. They are a great starting point for new hobbyists and a reliable favourite for seasoned reef keepers.

Discosoma mushrooms have a simple, round, and relatively flat shape, often with a smooth or slightly bumpy texture. They lack the long, aggressive tentacles of many other corals. Instead, they gently pulse and inflate with water, sometimes curling their edges up or down depending on flow and lighting. Their deep red colour provides a solid, consistent look.

Care for these mushrooms is straightforward. They prefer lower light conditions, somewhere in the 30-75 PAR range, as intense lighting can cause them to bleach or shrink. Place them in the lower regions of the tank, either on the sandbed or on low-lying rockwork. They do best in low to moderate, indirect water flow. While they get most of their energy from photosynthesis, they can absorb nutrients directly from the water column and may benefit from occasional spot-feeding with coral-specific foods. Maintain stable water parameters: Calcium around 420-440 ppm, Alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and Magnesium at 1300-1400. A key consideration is that they can spread, so give them their own section of rock to colonize to prevent them from overgrowing slower corals.

Red mushrooms are an excellent fit for most reef tanks. Their peaceful nature means they won't bother neighbours, as long as they are given space to multiply. They are generally ignored by most fish and invertebrates. Over time, a single mushroom can slowly divide and create a small patch, providing a nice field of colour without the high-maintenance demands of other corals.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
