Description

The Folded Brain Coral, Trachyphyllia geoffroyi, is a classic large-polyp stony coral that has been a mainstay in the hobby for decades. free-living, solitary coral, meaning it doesn't encrust on the rockwork. Instead, it rests on the sandbed, creating a focal point. This particular specimen shows a vibrant blend of deep red and teal across its fleshy tissue.

In a home reef, the Trachyphyllia's polyps will inflate considerably, softening its folded skeletal base. The beauty of this piece is in the distinct patterns formed by its red and teal colouration, which can shift and deepen under different lighting spectrums. At night, or when feeding, it may extend fine sweeper tentacles, so it's best not to place other corals right up against it.

For best care, Trachyphyllia should be placed on the sandbed under low to moderate lighting, generally in the 50 to 150 PAR range. It prefers low, indirect water flow that is just strong enough to keep detritus from settling on its surface without causing the tissue to pull back. While photosynthetic, it benefits from occasional target feeding with meaty foods like mysis or other LPS pellets a couple of times a week. Maintain stable water parameters, including calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm.

As a sand-dwelling coral, the Folded Brain makes an excellent and straightforward addition to a well-established reef tank. It doesn't require any complex mounting and can be moved if needed. Its peaceful nature makes it compatible with most common reef fish and invertebrates, provided they don't nip at the fleshy polyps. Just give it a bit of personal space on the substrate and it will settle in nicely.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
