Description
The Trachyphyllia, or Open Brain Coral, is one of the classic large polyp stony corals in the reef aquarium hobby. This free-living coral is known for its large, fleshy body and is a common sight in well-established reef tanks. This particular specimen displays the deep red colouration that makes this species so popular.
In its juvenile stage, a Trachyphyllia has a conical base that rests on the substrate. As it grows, the coral develops its characteristic folded, figure-eight shape. The entire structure is a single, continuous polyp that can inflate with water to a surprising size, often showing off its vibrant red tissue. At night or when feeding, it may extend small tentacles from its central mouths.
In a home reef, Trachyphyllia care is straightforward. It requires a permanent spot on the sandbed, as placing it on rockwork can damage its delicate tissue. Low to moderate lighting, in the 75-150 PAR range, is ideal; intense light can cause it to bleach. Water flow should be gentle and indirect to allow for full polyp expansion. It's a responsive feeder and will benefit from weekly offerings of meaty foods like mysis or finely chopped prawn. For long term health, maintain stable water parameters, with calcium at 420-440 ppm and alkalinity between 8-9 dKH. While not overtly aggressive, it can deliver a sting, so give it plenty of space on the sandbed to avoid contact with other corals.
As a solitary, slow-growing coral, the Open Brain is an excellent choice for adding a focal point to the bottom of a mixed reef. It stays put and its gradual growth makes it a predictable and low-maintenance addition for the long term.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
Payment & Security
We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
