Reverse Bleeding Apple Scolymia Australis

The Scolymia australis is a classic large-polyp stony coral, long appreciated in the reef aquarium hobby for its simple care and wide range of colours. As a solitary coral, a single specimen is a complete colony. This "Reverse Bleeding Apple" colour morph features a distinct, vibrant green outer ring that gives way to a rich red or orange central disc, creating a striking contrast.

In a home reef, the Scolymia presents as a single, fleshy, circular polyp. Its tissue can inflate substantially with water, giving it a soft, puffy appearance that hides the sharp skeletal structure underneath. This inflation can vary throughout the day. While it has very short sweeper tentacles, it is not an outwardly aggressive coral but should be given space to prevent it from being stung by more potent neighbours.

Care for the Scolymia is relatively straightforward. It prefers a spot on the sandbed or on a low-lying piece of rockwork. Lighting should be in the low to moderate range, between 75 to 150 PAR, as intense light can cause it to lose colour. Water flow should also be low and indirect, just enough to keep the surface clear of detritus without blasting the delicate tissue. Scolymia are capable feeders that benefit from a direct offering of meaty foods like mysis or pellet foods once or twice a week. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm.

The self-contained nature of a Scolymia makes it an excellent addition to almost any reef. Since it doesn't grow branches or runners, it stays right where you put it, making it a predictable and well-behaved resident for the long term. It's a perfect feature coral for a dedicated spot on the sandbed where its colour and form can be viewed from above.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
