Splattered Lobophyllia

Splattered Lobophyllia are a classic large polyp stony (LPS) coral in the reef aquarium hobby. They are known for their fleshy polyps and captivating colour patterns, making them a popular choice for many aquarists. This piece measures approximately 7cm. They are generally considered moderately easy to care for, thriving in stable reef tank environments.

Lobophyllia corals typically form encrusting or massive colonies with individual polyps sharing a common skeletal structure. Their 'splattered' appearance comes from the irregular distribution of various colours across their fleshy tissue. The polyps extend during the day and night, adding dynamic movement and a vibrant focal point to the aquascape.

For optimal health, Splattered Lobophyllia prefer moderate lighting, around 75-150 PAR. Provide moderate, indirect water flow to keep detritus from settling on their polyps without causing tissue damage. Placement on the sand bed or lower to mid-rockwork is generally suitable. While they host zooxanthellae for most of their nutritional needs, occasional target feeding with meaty foods like mysis shrimp or brine shrimp can promote faster growth and vibrant colouration. Maintain stable water parameters: calcium 400-440 ppm, alkalinity 8-10 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. Give them adequate space from other corals, especially aggressive ones, as their sweepers can extend a significant distance. Acclimation should be slow, allowing the coral to adjust to your tank's lighting and water parameters gradually over several hours or days.

These corals add a unique texture and a splash of colour to any mixed reef, settling in nicely among other LPS or even some soft corals, provided there is enough clearance.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
