Splattered Toxic Eye Goniastrea Fragment

Goniastrea is a classic large polyp stony coral, a close relative of the more familiar Favia and Favites. In the reef aquarium hobby, Goniastrea offers a similar encrusting or boulder-shaped growth form, but with corallites that are often more angular and deeply set. Its colour palette typically ranges from deep reds and purples to greens and browns, sometimes with contrasting oral discs that create a striking pattern across the colony surface.

The surface of a Goniastrea colony is covered in a series of individual polyps, each with its own mouth. These polyps extend their tentacles for feeding, usually after lights out, but will remain fleshy and visible during the day. As the colony grows, it encrusts over the rockwork, following the contours of the aquascape. Depending on the species, the walls between the corallites are shared, giving it a distinctive brain-like or honeycomb appearance that adds texture to the reef.

For care in a home reef, Goniastrea is quite straightforward. It prefers moderate lighting levels, somewhere in the 75 to 150 PAR range, making it suitable for lower to mid-level placement in the tank. Water flow should be moderate and indirect, enough to keep the surface clean without causing the polyps to retract. While it gets most of its nutrition from its symbiotic zooxanthellae, it will benefit from occasional spot-feeding with coral foods or meaty plankton. Like other LPS corals, it requires stable alkalinity (8-10 dKH), calcium (420-440 ppm), and magnesium (1300-1400 ppm). Allow a few inches of space from its neighbours, as it can extend sweeper tentacles at night.

Goniastrea is a great choice for adding a textured, encrusting coral to a mixed reef tank. It is generally peaceful, but its sweeper tentacles mean a little separation from less aggressive corals is a wise precaution. Over time, it will grow into a solid, colourful feature that contributes to the overall stability and biodiversity of the aquarium environment.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
