Spotted Unicornfish (Juvenile) – Naso brevirostris
The juvenile Spotted Unicornfish is a striking and active open-water swimmer, well known for its sleek body shape and distinctive spotted patterning. As a young fish, it displays a soft silver-grey base colour covered in fine dark spots, creating a beautiful contrast that stands out in larger marine aquariums. This species grows into an impressive adult with a characteristic horn-like projection and bold colour changes, making it a rewarding long-term addition for experienced hobbyists.
Care Information
Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Generally gets along well with other large, active fish, but may become territorial with other Naso species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet of nori, marine algae, spirulina-rich foods, and supplementary mysis or high-quality pellets. Regular algae feeding is essential for long-term health.
Tank Size: Minimum 600–800L due to its active swimming behaviour and eventual adult size.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution – may nip at fleshy LPS if underfed, but generally safe with corals.
Notes: Provide strong water movement, open swimming space, and plenty of natural algae. Juveniles acclimate easily and are hardy once feeding well.
