Teal Trachyphyllia

The Open Brain Coral, Trachyphyllia geoffroyi, is a classic large-polyp stony coral that has been a fixture in the hobby for decades. It's a free-living, solitary coral that doesn't form large colonies, making it a unique feature in a home reef. This specimen presents with a deep teal colouration across its fleshy tissue.

In its natural environment on soft, sandy seabeds, the Trachyphyllia develops its signature folded, figure-eight, or kidney-like shape. The coral's tissue inflates significantly with water throughout the day, giving it a full, billowy appearance that can often hide the underlying skeleton completely. At night, it may extend short sweeper tentacles from its perimeter.

Successful long-term care for a Trachyphyllia requires sandbed placement. It should never be placed on rockwork, which can abrade its soft tissue. It prefers low to moderate lighting, within a 75-150 PAR range, and low, indirect water flow. While it gains much of its energy from photosynthesis, it feeds eagerly on small meaty foods offered once or twice a week. Maintain stable water conditions with calcium at 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-10 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm. Be sure to provide ample space between it and other corals.

A well-situated Trachyphyllia is an excellent focal point for the sandbed of an LPS-dominant or mixed reef aquarium. Its self-contained nature means it won't encroach on neighbouring corals, and its care requirements are straightforward in a stable system. It is a hardy coral once acclimated and established.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
