Toxic Bleeding Apple Scolymia

The Scolymia, or Button Scoly, is a classic LPS coral that holds a special place in the hearts of many reef keepers. These single-polyp beauties are known for their vibrant colours and interesting patterns, making them a captivating centrepiece in a mixed reef aquarium. This particular piece measures approximately 5cm. It is often regarded as a relatively straightforward coral to keep once its basic needs are met. This makes it a great choice for both intermediate hobbyists and those new to LPS corals. This specimen presents a striking blend of colours, suggesting the "Toxic Bleeding Apple" description. They feature a single, large polyp with a fleshy mantle that typically remains inflated, showcasing its unique surface texture and colouration. The central mouth is usually distinct. When healthy, Scolymia corals are quite stationary, focusing their energy on growth and maintaining their vibrant appearance. For optimal growth and health, Scolymia corals thrive under moderate lighting conditions, ideally between 75-150 PAR. They appreciate low to moderate indirect water flow to keep their surface clean without causing tissue recession. Placement on the sand bed or lower rockwork is generally preferred, where they can fully inflate without being overshadowed. While zooxanthellate, they benefit significantly from supplemental feeding of fine meaty foods like mysis shrimp or copepods a few times a week, especially after the lights are out. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium at 400-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-10 dKH, and magnesium at 1250-1350 ppm. These corals are not overtly aggressive but should be given adequate space to avoid irritation from neighbouring corals. Acclimation should be gradual, particularly to new lighting intensities.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
