Description

Platygyra species, commonly known as maze brain corals, are a popular choice for reef aquarists seeking a unique and hardy addition to their marine environment. Their distinctive structure, characterized by long, meandering corallite walls, creates an intricate labyrinthine pattern that adds texture and depth to any rockwork. They are appreciated for their steady growth and resilience, making them a suitable option for those who have some experience with stony corals.

The appearance of a maze brain coral is defined by its massive, encrusting growth form that follows the contours of the rock it settles on. This particular variety exhibits a vibrant green coloration across the fleshy tissue covering its skeletal walls. The valleys, or oral discs, between these walls may present a slightly different shade, adding subtle contrast. At night, the coral may extend small, translucent polyps from these valleys to capture food from the water column.

For best results, Platygyra corals require a stable reef environment. They thrive under low to moderate lighting conditions, ideally within a PAR range of 75-150. Placement in the lower to middle third of the tank, either on the sandbed or low on the rockwork, is recommended. Water flow should be moderate and indirect; enough to prevent detritus from settling in its deep valleys, but not so strong as to cause tissue damage. While photosynthetic, they benefit from target feeding once or twice a week with meaty foods like mysis shrimp or specialized LPS pellets. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium at 1250-1350 ppm. Be aware that maze brain corals can extend sweeper tentacles at night, so provide at least a few inches of space from neighboring corals to prevent aggression. Proper drip acclimation is essential for a smooth transition into your aquarium.

A maze brain coral is a worthwhile addition for its fascinating appearance and manageable care. Its unique maze-like pattern offers a different kind of visual appeal compared to branching or plating corals, contributing a wonderful element of structural diversity to a mixed reef aquarium.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
