Toxic Green Maze Brain Coral

The maze brain coral is a classic large polyp stony (LPS) coral, known scientifically as Platygyra species. These corals are a familiar sight in reef aquariums due to their distinctive folded appearance and straightforward care requirements. This particular specimen shows the bright green colouration that gives this type its common name.

Its skeleton grows in a distinctive pattern of winding, interconnected walls, resembling a maze. The fleshy tissue between these ridges is a vibrant green. At night, this coral extends long sweeper tentacles from its polyps, which are used for feeding and to defend its territory from other corals. natural behaviour, but it is important to be aware of when placing it in a mixed reef.

For best health, a maze brain coral requires moderate lighting, in the range of 100-150 PAR. It does well placed on the sandbed or in a lower-to-mid-level position on the rockwork. Flow should be moderate and indirect, enough to keep the tissue clear of detritus but not so strong that it causes the flesh to retract. It will benefit from occasional target feeding with meaty foods, but its primary nutrition comes from photosynthesis. Stable water parameters are key, with calcium around 420 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium near 1350 ppm. Be sure to give it plenty of space, as its sweeper tentacles can reach several centimetres and will damage neighbouring corals.

A well-placed maze brain coral can be a focal point in a stable system. Its steady growth and predictable nature make it a rewarding species to keep. Over time, it will encrust the rock or sand bed around its base, forming a solid, textured foundation that becomes part of the reef structure. Its green colour provides a great contrast to the blues, purples, and reds of other common reef inhabitants.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
