Description

Platygyra species, commonly known as maze or brain corals, are a classic choice for reef aquarists seeking a unique and hardy Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral. Their distinctive appearance comes from their corallites, which form long, interconnected valleys that resemble a labyrinth. This structure provides a fascinating focal point and adds a great deal of texture to any reef scape.

The typical appearance of a green Platygyra is a massive, encrusting colony with a vibrant green coloration across its fleshy tissue. The ridges and valleys can sometimes display contrasting colors, adding to its visual appeal. At night, this coral may extend its feeder tentacles from the mouths located within the valleys, creating a different but equally interesting look. Its growth pattern is generally slow to moderate, gradually encrusting over the rockwork it is placed upon.

For care, maze corals prefer moderate lighting conditions, ideally within a PAR range of 75 to 150. They should be placed in the lower to middle sections of the aquarium on the rockwork where they can receive moderate, indirect water flow. Strong, direct flow can prevent the polyps from fully expanding. While photosynthetic, they benefit from occasional target feeding with meaty foods like mysis shrimp or specialized LPS pellets. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium from 1250-1350 ppm. It is important to note that Platygyra are aggressive; they can extend long sweeper tentacles at night that will sting and damage neighboring corals, so provide several inches of space between them and other inhabitants. Standard drip acclimation is recommended when introducing it to your aquarium.

With its striking geometric pattern and bright green color, the maze coral is a rewarding species for the intermediate hobbyist. Its steady growth and resilience make it a worthwhile addition that brings a classic brain coral look to the home reef aquarium.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
