Toxic Green Mouth Heliofungia

Heliofungia, often called plate coral, disk coral, or mushroom coral, are fascinating free-living LPS corals that add a unique dynamic to a reef aquarium. Unlike many other large polyp stony corals, Heliofungia are not encrusting or attached to rockwork, instead resting on the substrate as a solitary polyp.

This species typically forms a circular or oval disc. The oral disc of this particular specimen features a striking toxic green mouth, which stands out against its surroundings. This piece measures approximately 10cm.

Heliofungia prefer moderate to high PAR lighting (150-300 PAR) and moderate, indirect water flow. Placing it directly on the sandbed is ideal, ensuring it has enough space to expand its fleshy mantle and is not overshadowed by other corals. While primarily photosynthetic, supplemental feeding of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or copepods a few times a week is beneficial. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium around 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1300-1400 ppm. Ensure ample spacing from other corals as it can extend sweeper tentacles at night.

Heliofungia can be a focal point in a well-established reef, offering visual interest with its unique form and the vivid green colour of its mouth. They are generally peaceful but require careful consideration for placement to thrive.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
