Toxic Green Mouth Lobophyllia

The Lobophyllia, often called a lobo or brain coral, is a popular and relatively robust large polyp stony (LPS) coral in the reef aquarium hobby. Known for its distinct, fleshy polyps, it makes a striking addition to a mixed reef. This particular specimen displays a captivating green mouth against a contrasting body. This piece measures approximately 12cm.

Lobophyllia corals typically grow in a massive, encrusting, or hemispherical form. Their large, often highly textured polyps give them a substantial presence. The coral's mouth, a prominent feature, is a vibrant green on this specimen, providing a focal point for its overall coloration. The body, while contrasting, complements the bright green of the mouth.

Lobophyllia thrive under moderate lighting, ideally between 75-150 PAR. They prefer moderate, indirect water flow to keep detritus from settling on their polyps without causing tissue damage. Placement on the sand bed or a lower to mid-level rockwork shelf is generally suitable, allowing ample space for their fleshy polyps to expand without touching neighbouring corals, as they can be aggressive. While they contain symbiotic algae for most of their nutritional needs, occasional feeding of meaty foods like mysis shrimp or target-feeding prepared LPS pellets can enhance growth and coloration. Maintain stable water parameters: Calcium 400-450 ppm, Alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and Magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. When introducing a new specimen, ensure it has enough space to prevent stinging other corals.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
