Description
Fungia corals, often called plate corals, are a fascinating and unique addition to a home aquarium. Unlike most stony corals that form colonies, the Fungia is a solitary, free-living coral. This means it can inflate its tissue and even move small distances across the sandbed, adding a dynamic element to the lower regions of a reef tank. Their hardiness and interesting behaviors make them a popular choice for both new and experienced hobbyists.
This species typically forms a flat or slightly domed circular skeletal plate, from which its common name is derived. The surface is covered in fleshy polyp tissue with prominent radial ridges, or septa, that extend from a central mouth. Short, translucent tentacles often emerge, particularly at night or during feeding. The coloration is a solid, vibrant green across the surface of the polyp, which can be quite eye-catching under aquarium lighting.
For proper care, Fungia corals should be placed directly on the sandbed in an area of low to moderate water flow. Placing them on rockwork is risky, as a fall could damage their tissue and skeleton. They are adaptable to a range of lighting, but do best in low to moderate intensity, with a PAR reading between 75 and 150. While photosynthetic, they are voracious eaters and benefit significantly from regular target feeding. Offer meaty foods like mysis shrimp or finely chopped seafood directly to their central mouth once or twice a week. Maintain stable water parameters, including calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity of 8-12 dKH, and magnesium between 1250-1350 ppm. Provide at least 4-6 inches of space from neighboring corals, as they can be aggressive.
The Fungia coral is a worthwhile specimen for any reef keeper looking to add diversity and interest to their tank. Its self-sufficient nature and unique ability to move make it more than just a stationary piece of sessile life, offering a different kind of interaction and observation for the attentive aquarist.
Please note: This is not a WYSIWYG item. You will receive a coral frag of the same species and similar coloration/quality to what is photographed, but the exact specimen may vary. Each piece is unique and hand-selected for health and color.
Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
Payment & Security
We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
