Description
Description
Hammer corals are one of the most recognisable large polyp stony (LPS) corals in the reef-keeping hobby. As part of the Fimbriaphyllia genus, they are known for their distinctive polyp shape and the gentle, swaying motion they bring to an aquarium. This particular specimen is a branching variety with a classic green colouration that has made the species a long-time favourite.
The common name comes from the anchor or hammer-shaped tips of its tentacles. During the day, these polyps extend and swell with water, creating a soft, fleshy appearance. At night, or if disturbed, the polyps retract to reveal the branching calcareous skeleton beneath. This specimen has a field of green tentacles that create a sense of depth and movement in the water.
In a home reef, hammer corals do best under moderate lighting, with a PAR range of 100-150 being a good target. They prefer moderate, indirect water flow, which allows the polyps to expand fully without being beaten back. While largely photosynthetic, they will show improved health and growth with occasional feedings of LPS pellets or small meaty foods. Stable water parameters are important; maintain calcium at 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm. Because they can produce sweeper tentacles, it’s best to place them in a mid-level location on the rockwork with several inches of space from other corals.
This is a WYSIWYG item, so you'll receive the exact specimen pictured.
Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
Payment & Security
We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
