Description
Description
Trachyphyllia, often called an Open Brain Coral, is a classic Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral that makes for a fantastic centerpiece on the sandbed of a reef aquarium. As a free-living coral, it does not encrust on rockwork, instead possessing a conical base that allows it to sit comfortably on soft substrate. Its large, fleshy polyp and vibrant coloration make it a favorite among many hobbyists.
This species is known for its ability to inflate its tissue with water, sometimes doubling in size and showing off its rich color. A healthy Trachyphyllia will have a puffy, full appearance, and this bright green variant brings a concentrated splash of color to the lower regions of the tank. Its body is a single, continuous polyp that folds in on itself, creating the characteristic brain-like pattern.
A dedicated sandbed placement is ideal for a Trachyphyllia. It requires low to moderate water flow, just enough to prevent detritus from settling on its surface without causing the tissue to retract. Lighting should also be in the low to moderate range, with a PAR level of approximately 50-150 being sufficient. While photosynthetic, it benefits greatly from occasional target feeding of small, meaty foods like mysis shrimp or other prepared coral foods once or twice a week. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium from 1250-1350 ppm. Although generally peaceful, provide a few inches of space from neighboring corals to avoid any potential contact. Slow drip acclimation is recommended to help it adjust to new tank conditions.
The Trachyphyllia is a worthwhile and rewarding coral for most reef tanks. Its self-contained nature and relatively simple care requirements make it an engaging addition that brings life and intense color to what is often an empty part of the aquascape.
Please note: This is not a WYSIWYG item. You will receive a coral frag of the same species and similar coloration/quality to what is photographed, but the exact specimen may vary. Each piece is unique and hand-selected for health and color.
Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
Payment & Security
We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
