Toxic Orange Montipora

The plating Montipora species are a cornerstone of the SPS-dominant reef aquarium, known for their distinctive growth forms and vibrant colours. This particular variety, often called Toxic Orange, is a classic for good reason. Its intense orange base colouration and contrasting polyps make it a standout piece in any collection. It grows relatively quickly under stable conditions, forming tiered plates that add architectural complexity to the aquascape.

Under the right lighting, this Montipora develops a deep, solid orange that is consistent across the entire colony. The polyps are typically a lighter, contrasting colour, giving the surface a subtle texture. The colony will grow outwards from its base, creating shelves and overhangs. In a home reef, this growth pattern offers unique shadowing and light-play opportunities, and provides shelter for small fish and invertebrates.

Like most small-polyped stony corals, this Montipora prefers high light and strong, indirect water flow. A PAR value between 250 and 450 is a good target. Position it in the middle to upper regions of the tank where it can receive unimpeded light and flow. While it gets most of its energy from photosynthesis, it can benefit from occasional feeding with SPS-specific powdered foods. Maintain stable water parameters, with calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium at 1300-1400 ppm. It's a peaceful coral but can be overgrown by more aggressive species, so give it ample space to expand.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
