Description

The War Coral is a classic and distinctive colour morph of the Favites genus, a group of popular large polyp stony (LPS) corals. These corals are a mainstay in the hobby, known for their brain-like appearance, encrusting growth habit, and engaging personalities. The "War Coral" name comes from the intense, contrasting colours that look like they are battling for dominance across the surface of the colony.

Favites corals grow by encrusting over live rock, gradually forming a solid, contoured colony with a bumpy texture. The individual polyps share common walls, which distinguishes them from the related Favia genus. When feeding or during the night, short, fleshy tentacles will emerge from the centre of each polyp. A typical War Coral presents a deep red or maroon base colour with vivid green or sometimes bluish centres, creating a pattern that truly draws the eye.

For care, War Corals thrive in established reef aquariums with stable parameters. They prefer moderate lighting levels, typically in the 100-200 PAR range, making them suitable for the middle or lower sections of the tank. Water flow should be moderate and indirect, enough to prevent detritus from settling on their surface but not so strong that it causes the tissue to retract. Target feeding with meaty foods like mysis shrimp or specialized LPS pellets once or twice a week will speed up growth. It's crucial to remember that Favites are aggressive; they will extend potent sweeper tentacles at night that can damage or kill neighbouring corals. Allow for several inches of space between a War Coral and any other coral.

Given its aggressive nature and steady encrusting growth, careful placement is a long-term decision. Positioning a War Coral on an isolated piece of rockwork is a common strategy to give it room to expand without waging war on its tank mates. With the right conditions, it becomes a permanent, colourful fixture in a well-managed reef.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
