Description
The Favites coral, commonly known in the hobby as the War Coral, is a popular Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral appreciated for its vivid coloration and encrusting growth pattern. It gets its name from its aggressive nature and the long sweeper tentacles it uses to compete for space with neighboring corals. For many hobbyists, this coral is an engaging addition that brings a splash of intense color to the lower and middle sections of the reef aquarium.
The appearance of a Favites coral is characterized by its fused, angular corallites that create a distinctive honeycomb-like surface. The polyps are large and fleshy, often displaying deep, contrasting colors between the outer rim and the central mouth. While coloration is variable, they frequently exhibit combinations of deep reds, greens, oranges, and purples, which makes them a focal point on the rockwork as they grow and encrust over the surface.
For best care, War Corals should be placed in the lower to middle third of the aquarium on the rockwork. They prefer low to moderate lighting levels, ideally in the 75-150 PAR range, as intense light can cause discoloration. Water flow should be moderate and indirect, enough to keep the coral clean of detritus without blasting the fleshy polyps directly. While photosynthetic, they benefit from target feeding once or twice a week with meaty foods like mysis shrimp or specialized LPS pellets. Maintain stable water parameters with calcium at 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium at 1250-1350 ppm. Due to their aggressive nature, be sure to provide at least 3-4 inches of space between them and other corals to avoid stinging from their sweeper tentacles. Acclimate slowly using a drip method to prevent shock.
With its bold colors and active presence, the War Coral is a rewarding species for the prepared aquarist. Its steady encrusting growth provides a fascinating look at how corals establish territory, offering a classic reef aquarium experience for those who can give it the space it requires.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
