War Paint Scolymia

Scolymia, sometimes called 'Scoly', are a truly iconic large polyp stony coral in the reef hobby. These single-polyp brain corals are prized for their unique colour patterns and generally undemanding care requirements, making them a popular choice for many aquarists. This War Paint Scolymia brings a distinctive splash of colour to any reef.

This specimen measures approximately 8cm. Scolymia display a striking circular or oval shape with fleshy polyps that inflate to reveal their intricate patterns. The 'War Paint' variety is known for its vibrant and contrasting hues, often featuring bold markings that stand out against the backdrop of its base colour. They are nocturnal feeders, but their daytime appearance is what makes them so popular.

Scolymia thrive in moderate lighting conditions, ideally around 50-150 PAR. Too much light can cause them to recede and lose colour, while too little will make them stretch for light. Moderate, indirect flow is best to keep detritus from settling without damaging their delicate tissue. They are best placed on the sandbed or a lower rock shelf where they can fully inflate without touching other corals. Target feeding small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or copepods a few times a week will help with growth and colouration. Maintain stable water parameters: calcium 400-440 ppm, alkalinity 8-10 dKH, and magnesium 1300-1400 ppm. Ensure adequate spacing from aggressive neighbours, as Scolymia can extend sweeper tentacles at night. Acclimation should be slow and gradual, especially regarding light.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
