Warpaint Scolymia

Scolymia, often referred to as Scoly, Button, or Doughnut Corals, are a cherished LPS coral in the reef aquarium hobby. Their generally low-maintenance care, vibrant colours, and distinct circular growth form make them a popular choice for both new and experienced aquarists. This particular specimen is a Warpaint Scolymia, a highly sought-after morph known for its striking patterns. This piece measures approximately 6cm across.

Scolymia are typically solitary, stony corals with a large, fleshy polyp that covers a circular skeletal base. They exhibit a smooth, often slightly textured surface, and the "Warpaint" description refers to the intricate and contrasting colouration that radiates from the central mouth. Their patterns are truly unique to each individual coral.

For care, Scolymia thrive under moderate to low lighting, typically around 50-150 PAR, and prefer moderate, indirect water flow to keep detritus from settling without irritating their fleshy polyps. Ideal placement is often on the sandbed or securely in the lower to mid-regions of the rockwork. While they are primarily photosynthetic, benefiting from their symbiotic zooxanthellae, they will also readily consume meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or copepods. Target feeding a few times a week can enhance growth and colouration. Maintain stable water parameters: Calcium 400-450 ppm, Alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and Magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. Scolymia are not particularly aggressive but should be given ample space, at least a few inches, from other corals to avoid direct contact.

A Warpaint Scolymia makes an outstanding focal point in a mixed reef or an LPS-dominated aquarium. Their distinct appearance and moderate size allow them to stand out beautifully.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
