Yellow Mouth Scolymia

Scolymia are a fascinating group of large polyp stony corals, well-loved in the reef keeping hobby for their striking colours and relatively straightforward care. This particular specimen, a Yellow Mouth Scolymia, showcases a vibrant yellow centre, offering a beautiful focal point in any reef aquarium. They are often collected in their natural habitats from various locations across the Indo-Pacific. This piece measures approximately 6cm. Though small, Scolymia often come with a big personality. This vibrant yellow mouth will certainly stand out. Most Scolymia grow as a single, large polyp, though some varieties can form small colonies. Their fleshy polyps expand and retract, often displaying captivating patterns and textures. The dominant feature of this specimen is its bright yellow mouth, which stands out against the deeper colours of its body. When fully inflated, the polyp will exhibit its full beauty, creating a stunning visual impact. For optimal health, Scolymia require moderate lighting, ideally around 80-150 PAR. While they appreciate some water movement, aim for low to moderate indirect flow to prevent tissue damage. They are best placed on the sand bed or securely on a lower rock ledge where they can fully expand without being overshadowed. Feeding is important for Scolymia growth and vitality. Offer meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or small pieces of fish two to three times a week. Maintaining stable water parameters is key: calcium at 400-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-10 dKH, and magnesium at 1300-1400 ppm. Ensure adequate spacing from other corals, as Scolymia can be aggressive with sweeper tentacles, especially at night. Acclimation should be slow, allowing the coral to adjust to your tank's water parameters and lighting.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
