Yellow Small Dome Fungia Coral

Fungia corals, often called plate corals, are a classic and fascinating large-polyp stony coral. Unlike most corals that encrust or branch from a fixed base, Fungia are solitary animals that live freely on the sandbed. This particular specimen is a small domed variety with a solid yellow body that brings a strong block of colour to the lower levels of a reef aquarium.

In a home reef, the Fungia coral will spend its time on the sand. Its fleshy polyp tissue conceals a hard, disc-like skeleton. These corals have the surprising ability to inflate themselves with water and even slowly move around the aquarium floor. This specimen’s bright yellow polyp has short, subtle tentacles that emerge from its ridges, giving it a slightly textured appearance. It has a single central mouth, which becomes quite prominent during feeding.

For best results, place your Fungia on the sandbed in an area of low to moderate light, with a PAR range between 75 and 150 being a good target. It’s important to give it low, indirect water flow; strong, direct currents can prevent it from expanding or cause tissue damage. While photosynthetic, it’s a very willing feeder and will benefit from regular meals of meaty foods like mysis shrimp or chopped prawn placed directly onto its mouth. Maintain stable water parameters, including calcium around 420-440 ppm and alkalinity at 8-9 dKH. Keep neighbouring corals at a distance, as the Fungia may move and could damage any sessile corals it settles on top of.

Plate corals are an excellent way to add interest to the sandbed, an area that can sometimes be overlooked. They are generally peaceful as long as they have their own personal space to roam. Once settled into a stable system, they are quite hardy and can be a long-lived resident in the aquarium.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
