Description

Zoanthids, affectionately known as "zoas" in the hobby, are a staple for both new and experienced reef keepers. These colonial polyps are appreciated for their simple care and the vast range of colours they can exhibit. In a home aquarium, they form dense mats that can cover rockwork, adding a splash of colour and texture. A well-established colony brings a unique energy to any reef scene.

Individual Zoa polyps are connected at the base by a fleshy mat called the coenenchyme. Each polyp has a distinct oral disc surrounded by a skirt of tentacles. Colours can range from subtle earthy tones to vibrant combinations of green, yellow, orange, and blue, often with contrasting patterns on the disc and tentacles. Under actinic lighting, many varieties will fluoresce, revealing another layer of colour. They are generally stationary, but the colony will slowly spread over adjacent surfaces.

Zoanthids are forgiving when it comes to care, which is a big part of their popularity. They do best under moderate lighting, somewhere in the 75-150 PAR range, though many varieties can adapt to lower or higher light. Too much light can cause them to close up or lose colour. They prefer moderate, indirect water flow—enough to keep the polyps free of detritus but not so much that it prevents them from opening fully. While they get most of their nutrition from photosynthesis, they can benefit from occasional broadcast feeding of coral-specific foods. It's important to handle Zoanthids with care, as some species can contain palytoxin; wearing gloves and eye protection is always a good practice.

A healthy Zoa colony is a satisfying addition to almost any reef tank. They are peaceful and won't sting their neighbours, but they can grow over slower-growing corals, so it's wise to give them their own piece of rockwork with some space to expand. They are generally not bothered by most fish, making them a reliable choice for a community reef.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
