Description

Zoanthids are a classic soft coral in the reef-keeping hobby, enjoyed for their wide range of colours and patterns. Found in shallow tropical reefs around the world, they form dense mats of individual polyps, each connected at the base. Because the title is general, this description will cover the common characteristics of the group rather than a specific colour morph.

Each polyp in a Zoanthid colony has a distinct oral disc, often with a contrasting colour or pattern, surrounded by a skirt of tentacles. They are colonial, and in a home reef, they will slowly spread over rockwork to form a carpet. Polyps will open and close in response to light and water conditions, and may stay closed for a day or two after being moved or disturbed.

Zoanthids are quite adaptable but do best with moderate lighting, in the 100-250 PAR range. They prefer moderate, indirect water flow; too much direct flow can prevent the polyps from opening fully. As with any coral, stable water parameters are key. Aim for calcium around 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300-1400 ppm. While photosynthetic, they can benefit from occasional small particle foods. Some Zoanthid species contain palytoxin, so it is wise to wear gloves and eye protection when handling them.

Due to their peaceful nature and encrusting growth form, Zoanthids are a great choice for adding colour to bare rockwork without interfering with neighbouring corals. They are generally reef-safe and get along with most common tankmates. Just give them their own rock or section of the reef to colonise, as they can grow over slower-growing corals.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
