Description

Zoanthids are a classic soft coral in the reef-keeping hobby, known for their distinctive mat-like growth and wide array of colours. These colonial polyps, often called "button polyps", grow interconnected at the base, forming dense clusters that can cover rockwork over time. Their diversity makes them a fixture in many reef aquariums, from nano tanks to large-scale systems.

Individual zoanthid polyps consist of a flat oral disc fringed with tentacles. They come in a vast spectrum of colours and patterns, with combinations of greens, oranges, reds, blues, and yellows often appearing in a single colony. The polyps will open and close in response to light and water conditions, and can withdraw completely when disturbed. Their growth form is encrusting, meaning they will spread across whatever surface they are placed on.

Zoanthids are generally adaptable, but they do best with moderate lighting, somewhere in the 75-150 PAR range. They prefer moderate, indirect water flow; too much direct flow can prevent them from opening fully. For water parameters, maintaining stable alkalinity (8-12 dKH), calcium (400-450 ppm), and magnesium (1250-1350 ppm) is key. While photosynthetic, they can benefit from occasional small particle foods. Some zoanthids contain palytoxin, so it is always wise to wear gloves and eye protection when handling them out of the water. Space should be left between them and other corals, as they can overgrow less aggressive neighbours.

Their hardiness and manageable growth rate make zoanthids a great choice for adding colour to a mixed reef. They can be placed on isolated rock "islands" on the sandbed to control their spread, or glued to rockwork in the mid to lower sections of the tank where they can form a living carpet.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
