Zoanthus Fragment

Zoanthus polyps are a foundational coral in the reef-keeping hobby, appreciated by beginners and collectors alike. Often called "zoas" or "button polyps", they are a colonial species that grows into a colourful mat. Because the Zoanthus genus is so diverse, they are found in a huge variety of colour combinations and patterns, making them a hobby staple for adding splashes of colour to any reef tank.

In a home aquarium, Zoanthus grow as a dense carpet of individual polyps connected by a fleshy base, or stolon. Each polyp has a flat oral disc, often in a contrasting colour to its skirt of short tentacles. They are active during the day, opening their polyps to gather light, and will retract when disturbed or at night. Their growth pattern makes them excellent for covering bare rockwork or frag plugs over time.

For best results, place your Zoanthus fragment under moderate lighting, in the 75 to 150 PAR range, though they can often adapt to higher light levels if acclimated slowly. They prefer moderate water flow, which is enough to keep detritus from settling on the colony but not so strong that the polyps are unable to open fully. While very tolerant of a wide range of water parameters, they do best in a stable system with calcium at 420-440 ppm, alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and magnesium at 1300-1400 ppm. Though photosynthetic, they can benefit from occasional broadcast feeding of fine particulate coral foods. Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling Zoanthus, as some carry palytoxin.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
