Description
Zoanthus polyps are a classic staple in the reef aquarium hobby for good reason. These colonial soft corals grow as a mat of individual polyps, connected at the base. Over time, they form a dense, colourful carpet over the rockwork, adding texture and movement to the aquascape. Their hardiness makes them an approachable coral for many hobbyists. A Zoanthus rock is a great way to introduce an established patch of these corals to a new or existing reef tank.
Each polyp on a Zoanthus rock is its own animal, with a central mouth, or oral disc, surrounded by a ring of small tentacles. They come in a nearly endless variety of colour combinations, typically featuring a contrasting skirt and oral disc. The polyps will open wide in the light to photosynthesise and will close up tightly at night or if disturbed. This opening and closing throughout the day adds a dynamic element to any tank.
For best results, provide moderate lighting, in the 75-200 PAR range, and moderate water flow. The goal with flow is to be strong enough to keep detritus from settling on the mat, but not so strong that the polyps are constantly blasted closed. Zoanthus are quite adaptable and can be placed nearly anywhere in the tank as long as they are properly acclimated. While largely photosynthetic, they do benefit from occasional broadcast feeding with fine particulate foods. Like all corals, they thrive in stable water parameters. It is important to handle Zoanthus with care and wear gloves, as some species can contain palytoxin.
Due to their peaceful nature, a Zoanthus rock can be placed near most other corals without issue. The main consideration is their growth rate; under good conditions, they will spread. It's wise to give them their own rock or section of the reef, allowing them to form a "garden" without encroaching on slower-growing neighbours. They are an excellent choice for adding a splash of living colour to bare rock or filling in spaces between other corals.

Our Quarantine Procedures
Our Quarantine Procedures
We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.
As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.
Fish
All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.
Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.
During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.
Coral
Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.
Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.
If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed
If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
Payment & Security
We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.
Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
