Description

Zoanthus polyps are a reef aquarium classic, appreciated for their hardiness and the wide spectrum of colours they present. Often called "zoas" or "button polyps," these colonial corals are a fixture in the hobby for good reason, creating dense, colourful mats over live rock. They are an excellent way to bring colour and life to a new aquarium or to fill in space in a mature reef.

The genus Zoanthus encompasses a huge variety of colour combinations, typically with a contrasting oral disc and skirt. These polyps are connected by a fleshy mat, known as the coenenchyme, that grows over the rock surface. They will open during the day to capture light and may retract at night or if disturbed. The rate at which a colony spreads is highly dependent on tank conditions, but they are generally considered fast-growing soft corals.

For best results, provide moderate lighting, in the range of 100 to 250 PAR. While they are primarily photosynthetic, Zoanthus will benefit from occasional spot feeding with fine particulate foods. They prefer moderate water flow, which helps keep detritus from settling on the colony. As with any coral, stable water parameters are key, but they are more forgiving than most. Place them with care, as they can overgrow slower neighbours; giving them a separate rock can be a good way to manage their spread. Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling Zoanthus, as a precaution against palytoxin.

Their adaptability makes them suitable for a wide range of reef aquariums. A well-placed Zoanthus rock can become a vibrant feature, bringing a splash of contained colour to the sandbed or lower rockwork. They are generally peaceful and compatible with most common reef fish and invertebrates.

Our Quarantine Procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.

Payment & Security

We offer a number of different payment methods, including Credit Card, Afterpay, Q Card, Pay at Collection, Bank Transfer and POLi.

Credit card payments are processed securely using the highest possible security protocols.
