Our quarantine procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Description

Goniastrea, commonly referred to as brain coral or closed brain coral, is a classic large polyp stony coral that has been a staple in mixed reef aquariums for decades. Known for its distinct, geometric corallites and hardy constitution, this two tone morph exhibits an attractive dual-colour contrast across its corallite walls and oral discs. Measuring approximately 7cm, this specimen presents a well-formed, compact skeletal structure ready for placement in an established reef system.

In the home aquarium, Goniastrea forms a dense, dome-shaped or encrusting colony over rockwork. During the day, the flesh remains relatively compact against the skeleton, highlighting the defined ridges and dual-colour pattern of each corallite. At night, it extends feeding tentacles from its mouths to capture particulate matter and suspended prey from the water column. While generally well-mannered during daylight hours, it is capable of deploying sweeper tentacles after dark to defend its territory, so giving it several centimetres of clearance from neighbouring corals is essential.

Care requirements are straightforward, making this coral suitable for reefers with some LPS experience. Place it in the lower to mid-level of the tank where it can receive moderate lighting between 100 and 150 PAR. Flow should be moderate and indirect; sufficient to keep detritus from settling within the recessed corallites without stripping or tearing the flesh from the skeleton. Goniastrea relies primarily on its symbiotic zooxanthellae for nutrition, but it benefits noticeably from weekly targeted feedings of micro-pellets, mysis, or coral paste when its polyps are extended. Maintain standard reef parameters with calcium at 400 to 450 ppm, alkalinity between 8 and 9 dKH, and magnesium around 1300 to 1350 ppm to support ongoing calcification and skeletal growth. Float and drip acclimate this piece slowly to ensure a seamless transition into your system.

This is a WYSIWYG item, so you'll receive the exact specimen pictured.

Please note that colours can look slightly different in person than in photos, depending on your lighting and screen, and the size given is an approximate guide measured at the time of listing.
