The Mirolabrichthys tuka, commonly known as the Purple Anthias or Tuka Anthias, is a brilliantly colored reef-safe fish native to the Indo-Pacific. With its electric purple body and soft golden-yellow accents, it adds a vibrant splash of color to any marine aquarium. Reaching up to 12 cm in length, this species is best kept in groups, ideally with one male and several females, to replicate its natural social structure. A minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Tuka Anthias are peaceful and reef-safe, making them suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive fish and invertebrates. They prefer stable water conditions with a temperature range of 24–27°C, salinity of 1.023–1.025, and a pH between 8.1–8.4. Moderate to strong water flow and aquascaping that includes both open swimming areas and shaded rockwork will help them feel secure and behave naturally. They may be shy when first introduced, so a calm environment and dimmed lighting during acclimation are beneficial.
This species has a high metabolic rate and requires multiple small meals throughout the day. A varied diet of enriched mysis shrimp, frozen Cyclops, fine marine pellets, and other zooplankton-based foods is essential. They can be slow to adjust to prepared foods, so live or frozen options may be needed initially. Due to their dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality, Tuka Anthias are best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists. With proper care, they reward keepers with their graceful schooling behavior and stunning coloration.
