Red Symphyllia

Symphyllia, often known as Brain Coral, is a substantial LPS coral that makes a striking centrepiece in many reef aquariums. Known for its vivid colouration and robust structure, these corals are a popular choice for their relatively straightforward care and impressive visual impact. This piece measures approximately 6cm. Its deep red hue is particularly eye-catching, offering a warm tone to the aquascape. A healthy Symphyllia will display a full, fleshy appearance, indicating good water quality and lighting. This particular specimen exhibits a rich, uniform red. It has a characteristic folded, maze-like surface, creating intricate patterns across its dome-shaped colony.

Symphyllia polyps typically expand well during the day, revealing their textured surface. While generally peaceful, they possess powerful sweeper tentacles at night, which can extend significantly to sting neighbouring corals. This red variant maintains its colouration well under appropriate lighting.

For care, Symphyllia thrives under moderate lighting, ideally around 100-200 PAR, and requires moderate, indirect water flow to keep detritus from settling without damaging its fleshy polyps. Placement on the sand bed or lower-to-mid levels of the rockwork is suitable. Regular feeding with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or coral pellets once or twice a week is beneficial, though they do get nutrition from their zooxanthellae. Maintaining stable water parameters is crucial: Calcium at 400-450 ppm, Alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and Magnesium at 1300-1400 ppm. When introducing this coral, allow for a slow, gentle acclimation to avoid shocking the specimen. Ensure ample space from other corals to prevent chemical warfare or stings from its sweeper tentacles.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
