Speckled War Paint Morph Scolymia

Scolymia, sometimes called Button Coral or Doughnut Coral, are cherished LPS corals in the reef-keeping hobby for their distinctive patterns and relatively easy care. This particular specimen is a Speckled War Paint Morph, showcasing a blend of colours and unique speckling that adds visual interest to any display. This piece measures approximately 4cm.

Scolymia corals typically grow as a single, large polyp, forming a dome or disc shape. Their fleshy polyps expand significantly, often obscuring their skeletal structure. The Speckled War Paint Morph exhibits a captivating interplay of hues across its surface, often with contrasting spots or flecks that define its "speckled war paint" designation, creating a vibrant focal point.

Scolymia thrive under moderate to low lighting, ideally around 50-100 PAR, and prefer lower, indirect water flow to prevent tissue damage and allow full polyp expansion. Placement on the sandbed or a lower rock shelf is usually best. They are enthusiastic eaters and benefit from target feeding small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or coral pellets several times a week, especially in newer tanks or when growth is desired. Stable water parameters are crucial: calcium 400-440 ppm, alkalinity 8-10 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. They are generally peaceful but should be given adequate space, as their fleshy polyps can sting neighbouring corals.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
