Toxic Green Goniastrea

Goniastrea is a well-regarded large polyp stony coral in the reefkeeping hobby, known for its robust nature and interesting growth patterns. These corals form solid, heavy colonies that are excellent foundational pieces in a reef aquarium, bringing a distinctive green hue to the aquascape. This piece measures approximately 7cm. This particular specimen exhibits a vibrant green coloration, living up to its name with a captivating appearance.

Typically, Goniastrea colonies grow in a massive or encrusting form, creating a strong presence on the rockwork. Their polyps are recessed into the skeleton, forming a distinctive maze-like or honeycomb pattern with clearly defined walls and valleys. When extended, the polyps reveal their brilliant green tissue, adding depth and texture. The overall structure provides a sense of established maturity to any reef environment.

Goniastrea corals are relatively hardy and adaptable, making them a good choice for a range of reef keepers. They thrive under moderate lighting, ideally between 100-200 PAR, and prefer moderate, indirect water flow to prevent detritus from settling without irritating the polyps. Placement on the lower to mid-level of the aquascape on stable rockwork is generally suitable. While these corals primarily gain nutrition from their zooxanthellae, occasional target feeding with fine-particulate foods like marine snow or zooplankton can promote faster growth and vibrant health. Maintaining stable water parameters is crucial: Calcium at 400-440 ppm, Alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and Magnesium at 1250-1350 ppm. Like most LPS, Goniastrea can be aggressive, extending sweeper tentacles at night, so ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
