Our quarantine procedures

We take livestock seriously. That's why we don't sell anything we wouldn't be comfortable putting in our own tank.

As we are direct from source, we import and sell direct to the public. This means you can buy with confidence knowing EMA prides itself on excellent handling and conditioning protocols.

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Description

Scolymia australis, commonly referred to simply as the scoly, is one of the most iconic and sought-after solitary large polyp stony corals in the marine aquarium hobby. Native to southern Australian waters, these single-polyp corals are celebrated for their circular disc structure and vibrant tissue inflation. This particular specimen is an ultra grade piece measuring approximately 7cm across, showing the dense fleshy mantle and distinct concentric patterning typical of premium Australian imports.

During daylight hours, the polyp swells with water to expand its fleshy mantle across the underlying calcium skeleton, creating a broad, smooth, disc-like appearance. At night, or during targeted broadcast feedings, the coral extends a ring of translucent feeding tentacles from its perimeter and central mouth to trap micro-fauna and suspended meaty particles. It grows slowly, maintaining its solitary form rather than budding into a colonial mass, making it an ideal long-term showpiece for established reef systems.

Care requirements are straightforward for an LPS coral, provided water chemistry remains stable. Aim for low to moderate indirect lighting with PAR values between 50 and 100, paired with gentle, intermittent water flow to keep detritus from settling on the disc. Placement on the sandbed or nestled low on the rockwork is ideal to prevent accidental falls and tissue damage. Provide standard reef parameters, keeping calcium between 420 and 440 ppm, alkalinity at 8 to 9 dKH, and magnesium between 1300 and 1350 ppm. Weekly target feedings of finely chopped mysis or dedicated LPS pellets will support sustained tissue health and growth. Ensure adequate spacing of at least five to eight centimetres from nearby aggressive corals, as contact will result in tissue recession. Acclimate gently via drip acclimation and light ramp down over a couple of hours.

This is a WYSIWYG item, so you'll receive the exact specimen pictured.

Please note that colours can look slightly different in person than in photos, depending on your lighting and screen, and the size given is an approximate guide measured at the time of listing.
