Warpaint Scolymia

Scolymia are a highly sought-after group of LPS corals, celebrated for their striking patterns and relatively simple care requirements. They make excellent showpiece corals in many reef aquariums, often becoming a focal point due to their vibrant colours and individual character. This piece measures approximately 6cm. Though often collected from various locations across the Indo-Pacific, captive aquaculture efforts are also increasing. Overall, they are a fantastic choice for both experienced and newer reef keepers looking for a captivating addition.

Scolymia typically exhibit a solitary, fleshy disc-shaped polyp. They can inflate significantly, especially at night or when feeding, showcasing their intricate patterns. The 'Warpaint' variety is particularly known for its diverse and often contrasting colour zones, which radiate from the central mouth. These patterns are unique to each individual coral, making every Warpaint Scolymia a one-of-a-kind specimen.

For optimal health, Scolymia thrive under moderate to lower lighting conditions, around 75-150 PAR, and prefer moderate, indirect water flow. Direct, strong flow can irritate their fleshy polyps. Placement on the sandbed or securely in the lower to mid-rockwork is generally ideal. While photosynthetic, they greatly benefit from regular target feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialized coral foods, especially after lights out. Maintaining stable water parameters is crucial: Calcium at 400-440 ppm, Alkalinity at 8-9 dKH, and Magnesium at 1300-1400 ppm. Scolymia are not aggressive towards other corals with stinging tentacles, but their fleshy polyps can be damaged by direct contact, so ensure adequate spacing from neighbours. Acclimation should be gradual, particularly for lighting and flow changes.

Fish

All our fish held in a quarantine system for a minimum of 3 weeks. During this time, regular water changes are performed, and twice daily (or sometimes more) feedings are performed.

Copper is dosed and checked twice a day for ich and velvet.

During this treatment fish are given formalin baths for brooklynella and a minimum of 3 praziquantel doses is performed for flukes.

Coral

Our coral is quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, just like fish. During this time, regular water changes are performed, water testing done, and once a month a Fauna Marin ICP Total is performed.

Corals are inspected for pests/general health and are provided with a pest dip once a week for at least 3 weeks.

If we see signs of pests, the quarantine period is extended and/or additional dips are performed

If coral is bleached/unhealthy, it will remain in quarantine until healthy enough to sell.
